Swimmer to miss world championships in Russia next August after USA Swimming imposes punitive suspension

US swimmer Michael Phelps, who recently returned to
top-level competition after a two-year retirement, was suspended on
Monday for six months by USA Swimming following his recent arrest on a
drunken driving charge.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, will also not represent the United States at the 2015 world championships in Russia next August, USA Swimming said in a statement.
The suspension means Phelps will be unable to compete in USA Swimming-sanctioned events for six months, and will not be eligible to swim again until March, 2015.
Phelps was arrested for drunk-driving on September 30 in Baltimore. He was also charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines. Police said he was driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone.
